Geocache Description:

Mavrovo Workers

Mavrovo is a region in the northwest of the Republic of Macedonia and it is a unique location to visit. It is home to Mavrovo National Park and a winter sports center. Some of the villages and smaller hamlets include: Mavrovo, Nikiforovo, Leunovo, and Mavrovi Anovi. Mavrovi Anovi (where the Cache is located) is located on the shores of Lake Mavrovo and in the middle of Mavrovo National Park.
The long road going around the lake is one of Macedonia’s most attractive hiking and running routes. As a starting point i would recommend the location of the Lake Mavrovo Dam (near the Monument in Mavrovi Anovi where the Cache is located) and then to head hiking towards the Bistra Skiing Center that will lead you through the most beautiful parts of the Mavrovo National Park.

The monument is dedicated to the victims of the snow catastrophe, caused by an avalanche that happened in Mavrovo on 12.02.1956. The victims were workers of the Lake Mavrovo Dam who were accomodated in their shacks when the avalanche happened.
