Cmentarz:
W miejscowosci Lichwin, na szczycie góry zwanej
Gródek albo Glowa Cukru znajduje sie najwiekszy pod wzgledem
obszaru w okregu tarnowskim cmentarz z I WS. Jest na nim
pochowanych 271 zolnierzy armii austro-wegierskiej i 337
rosyjskiej. Sa to glównie polegli podczas krwawych walk w maju 1915
r. Bylo to bardzo strategiczne miejsce zajmowane wówczas przez
Rosjan. 3 maja ok 5.00 rano oddzialy Austriackie po ataku zdobyly
to wzgórze. Jednak juz o godzinie 11.00 Rosjanie kontratakowali i
odebrali pozycje. Nastepnego dnia o swicie Austriacy zaatakowali i
zdobyli wzgórze ponownie, tym razem trwale je utrzymujac.
Cmentarz autorstwa Henricha Scholza nalezy do najpiekniejszych w
regionie. Najbardziej charakterystycznym elementem jest stojacy na
samym wierzcholku niski obelisk z wyrzezbionymi na nim 4
inskrypcjami w jezyku niemieckim, które w tlumaczeniu brzmia:
To wzgórze kryje skarb - wiernych, dzielnych mezów.
Nam wojna stala sie grobem - Wam odrodzeniem.
Gdy chodzicie w blasku dnia - pomyslcie o tych, którzy za Was
polegli.
Przybylismy z daleka, by znalezc smierc.
W tylnej czesci cmentarza znajduja sie dwa pomniki na
grobach zbiorowaych Austriaków i Rosjan. Na jednym z nich widnieje
inskrypcja w jezyku niemieckim:
Sto nazwisk uwiecznia ten kamien
Stu bohaterów, którzy tu polegli
Stokrotne cierpienia i udreka smierci
Stu zolnierzy, którzy pragna byc straznikami boga.
Ze szczytu rozciaga sie wspanialy widok na okolice. W obrebie
cmentarza pozostawiono resztki ziemnych umocnien oraz leje po
pociskach jako pamiatka po rozgrywajacych sie tutaj walkach.
Szczerze polecam wizyte w tym miejscu.

The Cemetery:
In village Lichwin, on the top of a hill called
Gródek or Glowa Cukru (Sugar Loaf) there is the biggest (regarding
area) war cemetery from WWI in Tarnów region. 271 Austro-Hungarian
and 337 Russian soldiers are buried there. They fell mostly during
bloody battles in May 1915. It was a very strategic spot occupied
by Russians. On 3rd May 1915 about 5.00 AM after attack, the
Austrian division captured the hill. But just at 11.00 AM Russians
counter-attacked and got back their position. Next day, in the
early morning Austrians attacked again, re-captured the hill and
kept it for good.
The cemetery is designed by Heinrich Scholz and is one of the most
beautiful in Tarnów region. The most distinctive feature stands on
the top of the hill - it is a small obelisk with 4 inscriptions
carved in German language:
This hill conceals a treasure - loyal, brave men.
For us the war became a grave - for you rebirth.
While walking on a shiny day - think about the ones who fell for
you.
We came from afar to find death.
In the back of the cemetery there are two memorials standing on
collective graves of Austrians and Russians. There is an
inscription on one of these in German language:
One hundred names immortalize this stone
One hundred heroes who fell there
Hundredfold suffering and torment of death
One hundred soldiers who want to be god's guards.
Beautiful panorama of the neighbourhood stretches from the top of
the hill. On the grounds of the cemetery there are remnants of
fieldwork and some craters after shells - traces after battles. I
strongly recommend visiting this spot.
