Geocache Description:

UPDATE 7/29: START TIME MOVED UP TO 10:00AM

Help restore beautiful Redwood Regional Park by removing the French broom that has been displacing native plants. Tools, protective equipment and refreshments will be provided. Cache In -Broom Out (CIBO)!

Meeting spot is at the junction of the Dunn and Baccharis trails at 10:00 a.m. Let's show the East Bay Regional Park District that geocachers are a responsible bunch of folks that care about the parks.

French broom (Genista monspessulana) is a non-native, invasive shrub that is rapidly displacing native vegetation. This scourge can quickly form a dense monoculture that crowds out a diverse array of native plant species. This loss in biodiversity has broad repercussions throughout the Redwood Creek watershed. The spread of dense stands of French broom also increases fire danger in the interface between our urban and wildland areas, as well as has negative impacts on water quality and quantity, and soil chemistry. There are several sites within Redwood Regional Park where native plants have begun to return as efforts to eliminate the broom have succeeded. Let's see if we can make an impact here as well.

This project requires walking up approximately 0.75 miles from the nearest parking at the Montiero trailhead, but there are caches along the way to break up the hike. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy boots. Bring rain gear or a sunhat and sunscreen,as needed. I did not see poison oak or thorny bushes at the event site, but they are fairly common throughout the park. Rangers will provide gloves, Ivy Block poison oak prevention cream and other protective items to keep attendees as safe and comfortable as possible.

Mention you're volunteering at the Broom Pull/Geocaching event if you're parking in the main lots inside the Redwood Gate and you can park for free.
