References to Codsall or as it was once known Codshale are few and far between but an early mention in the doomsday book of 1086 recorded that Codsall had a Lord, and approx 300 acres of ploughed land which suggests that the area was then prosperous and productive.
Throughout the Middle ages and as late as the 18th century Codsall was renowned for it’s sulphurous well which was located in a wood in the village and which gave off a strong odour detectable over a wide area. The water from the well was commonly used for treating leprosy and scabs and itch in both man and beast they came from miles around.
The well is now fenced off but viewable from the road it is reputed to have steps leading down into it.
