Yomitan Airfield
N 26 23.736 E 127 44.796
This cache is located on the site of the former Yomitan airfield.
Prior to World War II, the Yomitan airfield was used as a civilian airport. During the war, the Japanese military took over operations of the airfield and it was from here that many kamikaze attacks were carried out against American forces. The airfield was seized by American forces on April 1, 1945, the first day of the land invasion of Operation Iceberg. After the war, the airfield was developed into an American base for Army, Marine, and Naval aircraft. In 1972, the airfield was decommisioned and the land was returned to the Japanese government. Today, the airfield is used as automotive roads.

This cache is located next to a famous cave in Yomitan. During the Battle of Okinawa, many Okinawans took refuge in caves across the island. However in most caves, the Okinawans eventually killed themselves having been fed rumors that they would be treated terribly by the American forces. However, in the cave Shimukugama, around 1,000 Okinawans were saved.

Unrelated Name
N26 19.190 E127 45.359
A little stroll from one of the busiest hot spots on the island. The container holds only a log, and please BYOP. A multi-tool may help to remove the container, but it is not required. The path leads around a construction area that will eventually be an extension of the nearby shopping/dining area. The container is a small brown bottle with a white cap and magnets are involved...though it's not quite that simple. The cache is accessible from multiple side roads. Parking nearby is hard to come by, so park legally and take a walk. Enjoy!

It is about that time of the year for another day full of caching
and an event. The location will be Camp Shields Education Center on
February 27 2010 at 5:30-8 PM. This will be a meet n' greet/Pot
Luck event where you will have the chance to meet some of the
fellow cachers and hopefully some of the newer ones that have been
popping up lately. We will have some games for the children and
some prizes for the morning finds.

You DO NOT have to participate in the morning event to attend the actaul caching event. I will need to know how many will be participating in the actual hunt for prizes. We will be doing a small pot luck. I will provide the burgers and dogs if some of you could please bring some sides. Drinks will be on each of you to bring.
Remember, each cache will also be a real cache that will be available the day of the event. All caches will post that night after the event. They will only be available for a FTF for those who are part of the event. So, with this, you will have the chances to get not only the possibility of around 16 caches for the day, but a bunch of FTF's as well. There will be prizes for those who get the most FTF's, Most STF's and the unlucky cacher awards. Please RSVP and let me know who is willing to place a cache. Remember, all caches will be live caches so if you place one than you need to ensure you have placed them in the requirements of the Geocaching website. If you don't end up finding them at the event, you will still have the chance after the event.

Also, all of our older caches are now available for adoption. If you would like any of our caches, please let us know. If not, than we will be archiving quite a bit. We have about 50 caches to adopt out. They will be a first come first serve basis.

If you need assistance getting onto base, let me know. We can make arrangements for all to attend.
