Wheri(wanna)go Night Caching Wherigo Cache

This cache has been archived.

Clan Riffster: With a sad heart, I must pull the trigger on this one. Apparently, some nefarious muggle has decyphered the locations for some of the ammo can stages. These keep going missing. Rather than continue supplying the muggle with way kewl metal boxes, I decided to archive it. Keep an eye out. There will be something else to replace it, eventually.

Thanx to all who hunted it!

Geocache Description:

Like Melville's classic "Moby Dick", I think that this cache qualifies as the Riffster Clan's Magnum Opus. It's got ammo cans, it's got puzzles, it's got all manner of nasty critters in equally nasty habitats. What more could you ask for? Ultimately, you, the Seeker, will have to judge. You seek an ammo can that is not at the posted coords.

*****NOTE: The data for unlocking the first zone has been stolen by miscreants. Until the Division of Forestry can replace the map, the answer to the question at the Kiosk Zone can be found here. "Birding Trail"*****

This hunt will challenge you physically, mentally and spiritually, as you night hike about 4.5 miles, 2.5 miles of which will be pure, old school bushwhacking, through various habitats, dodging venomous snakes, wild hogs, gators and other critters who find humans tasty, solving several physical puzzles along the way. If your skills and luck are great enough, you might actually survive this quest. Pay attention to the D/T ratings, as they are not exaggerated.

If you've read this far down the cache page without running away screaming like a little girl, you may be ready for this hunt... Maybe... Bushwhacking, at the best of times, is a dangerous endeavor, as your vision is limited and all kinds of things are waiting to bite, trip, envenomate, sting, lacerate and poke you. Doing so at night can be deadly. By attempting this cache, you attest that you are doing so of your own free will, and you accept the consequences of your decision, agreeing to hold harmless the cache owner, Seminole County, the state of Florida and Groundspeak. In short, you and/or your estate won't sue when you get injured or killed.

You will start your hunt at the Barr St Trailhead for the Lil Big Econ State Forest, on County Rd 426, between Oviedo and Geneva.

Since this is a night cache, you will need to bring a good flashlight and a spare. To complete this quest, you will also need a second GPSr, besides the one used for playing the Wherigo cartrige, and a good compass. I also recommend a sturdy hiking staff, snake boots, sturdy jeans, a long sleeve shirt, a hat, bug spray, a cell phone and lots of water. You should also tell a loved one where you are going, so we can send out a search team in the event you don't survive. Because this is a Wherigo cache, you'll also need a device capable of playing the Wherigo cartridge, which can be downloaded at the link near the top of this page. There's no need to spend a buttload of money for a Colorado or Oregon, (though they are pretty darn kewl!), as there is a list of compatible devices here: (visit link)

How it works:
As you arrive at the parking coords, you'll notice that the Kiosk Zone is open. Follow your device to the kiosk and you'll be asked to answer a question, based upon what you find there. Get the answer right, and you'll unlock the next zone. Hike way down a trail, bushwhack a bit and you'll find an ammo can. From this point, you'll be bushwhacking. Solve the physical puzzle at this can and you'll get the code needed to unlock the next zone. There are a total of 5 physical puzzle ammo cans which you'll need to find (and solve!) in order to unlock the coords for the final, yet another ammo can. With most Wherigo caches, unlocking the next zone in your quest will make it visible to your device, giving you a direction and distance. That will not be the case here. After you unlock each of the 5 puzzle ammo can zones, you'll need to follow reflective trails that will dwindle away to nothing somewhere deep in the woods. As you reach the end of each reflective trail, the next zone should become visible. At that newly opened zone, your Wherigo device will give you coords to the next ammo can. I highly recommend using a standard GPSr to get you to each ammo can, instead of the dinky little arrow on your Wherigo device.

Fees
Because this is a State Forest, you must pay a fee to access the property. Daytime hiking costs $2.00 per person, and is payable at any designated entry point, using day use fee envelopes. Being here at night requires a camping permit, which you can obtain at the Division of Forestry Office, during banking hours. 1350 Snow Hill Rd. Geneva 407-971-3500 The cost is $10.00 a night and is good for up to 10 people. Since you absolutely should not attempt this cache solo, you can split the fee with your partners.

Trail maps
Trail maps are available at the kiosk. They may not be very useful when you are deep in the woods and unable to see landmarks. Groundspeak policy won't let me post a link, but if you e-mail me, I can give you a link to a free website where you can download the trailmap to your GPSr.

This cache was designed to be done at night, however, if someone had a really sharp eye, and could spot reflectors during the day, they could, conceivably do this during daylight hours, but it would be many times more difficult as the reflectors are pretty hard to spot. As long as you enjoy yourself, and don't get hurt, do it at whatever time you like.
