Vourvoulitis is the name of a cave/sinkhole over the eastern side of Agiofarango beach. The water in it is usually cold and comes from the sea through a tunnel in a depth of 10 m. The water level in the sink is independent of the sea level and is always steady. It is a kind of a sea lake with high rock walls and cavities with small stalactites. It serves as a habitat for wild pigeons and small fish.
If you are a good and fearless rock climber, you can climb down the walls and take a swim in the lake. But you have to be extremely careful of loose rocks.
From the cache area the view over the beach is great.
How to get there
There are two ways to get to Agiofarango:
1. From Sivas village and Odigitrias Monstery in the north, drive along an asphalt and later dirt road and park at WP1. Then you need to walk for about half an hour to the beach along the gorge.
Some meters away from Agios Antonios church, roughly at WP5, there is a path – mainly marked in red and visible – that leads upwards to the cache area.
You could also climb straight up from the beach, there is a substandard path, just be careful of loose rocks and secure your step.
2. From the village of Kali Limenes in the east and you need to walk for 1 hour. WP2, WP3 and WP4 are helpful. The path is well marked in red and visible. Before starting going down to the gorge you make a small detour to Vourvoulitis.
Either way, you need good shoes because the rocks are sharp.
The cache
The cache is hidden some meters away from Vourvoulitis and it is NOT dangerous to find. It’s a small plastic container wrapped in a plastic bag. It contains a pen, a logbook, the geocaching note and some goodies to trade.
Please, hide it well again!
You can combine this cache with other nice caches in the area.
Enjoy!
