Geocache Description:

Do come in!

A simple (or is it?) Traditional cache hidden at some very interesting remains from the old World War 2 RAF Tilstock airfield. Twemlows Big Wood is full of old buildings from the wartime, most of which are open and accessible to explore. There is even an old wartime car in one of the buildings!

RAF Tilstock was opened in mid 1942 with the name Whitchurch Heath being used until 1 June 1943, when the name Tilstock was adopted. Between September 1942 and January 1946 the airfield was used for pilot and crew training on Whitley, Stirling and Halifax bombers. The units based at the airfield were No 81 Operational Training Unit and No 1665 Heavy Conversion Unit.

Since the war, the airfield has been used for Auster AOP spotter aircraft and more recently a parachute jumping firm have been using it. Only one active runway remains - Runway 33/15.

Wartime car?

The Cache

It is a Regular sized lock 'n' lock box in a camo bag and full of decent swaps. We'd advise bringing a torch with you to really experience what this cache is about. You can probably find the cache without a torch but you'll be missing out on the history and atmosphere of the place.

The cache is hidden just inside the old Ops building of the airfield.{edit: now moved due to privatisation, follow the coords and clue} If you have time, it's worth exploring the building and the other surrounding buildings. They all looked safe enough, but obviously take care when searching for the cache and don't go anywhere you are not comfortable with.

Parking is available at various places just off the main A41 nearby. We'll leave it up to you to choose which one you prefer.

If you want to see more pictures, there are some really good ones on the excellent UK UE Urbex Urban Exploration Forums.
