Geocache Description:

A Short Multi-Cache set around the parish Church of St Mary’s in the village of Herriard in Hampshire. The Co-ordinates above are for the Parking area. Allow about 15 minutes or so for this cache.

The village of Herriard, midway between Basingstoke and Alton, is situated in one of the most attractive areas of north Hampshire. The gently rolling hills with its hedges and many woods keep the quiet and rural feel now lost too much of southern England. Beautiful beechwoods and parkland visible along the busy A339 are part of the Herriard Estate to which much of the village and surrounding farms belong.

Herriard evolved as a group of small hamlets and farms tracing their history back to Saxon and Danish agricultural settlements. Despite being affected by the Black Death, the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the Civil War, for hundreds of years this essential farming character was largely retained.

The old church was probably built by Sir Richard de Herrierd about the year 1200, and was dedicated to St. Mary, the Blessed Virgin. Until the mid 1800’s there was a square wooden turret at the west of the Nave with external brick steps leading to a square-headed door. The turret became unsafe (and reputedly collapsed), following which the church was substantially rebuilt and restored by Francis Jervoise, with the addition of the new stone tower, being completed in 1878. Now onto the cache itself :

On the Church roof is a weather vane. Use your skill and judgement to determine which animal is used to indicate the wind direction. This will guide you to the cache.

You are looking for a small camouflaged box hidden a short walk away. You will need to cross a busy main road, so please take care.

Look out for the flock of Black Sheep in the field to the north of the church.

If anybody would like to expand this Church Micro series, please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
