St Peter's, Lodsworth is a 13th century church with a 14th
century tower. E H Shepard, illustrator of 'Wind in the Willows'
and 'Winnie the Pooh' is buried in the churchyard.
The spring near St Peters church was a place of pilgrimage in
the Middle Ages, especially for people with eye problems, and a
source of revenue for the village. The well is located a few metres
along a footpath that joins the lower junction of Church Lane and
Rectory Lane.
The co-ordinates above are for car parking - you need to follow
Church Lane past the lych gate and round to the back of the
church.
In the past, my Church Micros have given you the co-ordinates
for each question you need to answer. I recently did a Church Micro
where you had to explore the churchyard and find the answers for
yourself - which I thought was great fun, so that's what you have
to do with this one! All the answers can be found on
clearly-written headstones.
Question 1 - W Ayling served as a Leading Stoker on HMS Queen
Mary. What was his RN number? 29A0B1.
Question 2 - William Kingshott has a headstone which looks far
more recent that 1905 - the year when he died. There is a quotation
on the stone. If it is; "Immortal Invisible, God only Wise" then C
= 6 "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" then C = 7 "Rock of Ages,
Cleft for Me" then C = 8.
Question 3 - The Warrens have some incredible stonework above
their grave. How many lions are there on the coat of arms? Answer =

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, I would
just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can
keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid
duplication
