One day this summer I was driving slowly along the backroads of
Michigan, enjoying the scenery. In the distance, I noticed a cow
standing in a field near the roadside. She was a black and white
spotted cow; a Holstein or Friesian, I believe, not a Gurnsey.
As I got closer, I realized she was smiling and waving. It was a
big wide toothy grin. Eyecatching, really. I pulled over and
stopped since seeing a smiling cow is not an everyday occurence for
me.
Imagine my surprise when the cow walked over, leaned against a
nearby signpost, and said "Howdy there, stranger!" I frankly did
not know how to respond. Unless I was mistaken, the smiling cow was
also talking! And clearly, "How now,
brown cow?" would be an inappropriate and flippant
choice.
"Ummm... Hi Cow, what's up?", I finally ventured.
"I have an idea for a geocache", she said. "Come over here and
let me whisper it to you."
A minute or two later, a policeman drove up. Excitedly, I told
him "This smiling cow can talk. She just flagged me down and
whispered a great puzzle cache idea in my ear!"
After staring at me silently for about 30 seconds, he rolled his
eyes and said, "Buddy, do you expect me to believe that crazy
story? Have you gone udderly
insane? If not, you are certainly ON THE
BORDERLINE. Now get back in your car and drive on --
before I decide to cite you for a
mooving violation!"
