Cette multi-cache vous fera passer par les 7 sources d’eau chaude d’ Ax-Les-Thermes (de 23° à 74°) dont le libre accès fait partie des droits immémoriaux des habitants de cette ville. Elles font partie des 63 sources répertoriées et donnant une production pouvant aller jusqu’à un million et demi de litres par jour !

Pourquoi ces sources d’eau chaude ?
L’explication proposée par la légende pourrait être intéressante :
En fait, l’or que l’on dit trouver sous forme de paillettes dans l’ Oriège* (une des trois rivières qui coulent à Ax-Les-Thermes) aurait été un don de Dieu aux habitants d’Ax. Ces derniers furent corrompus par le Diable qui leur apprit la tentation et l’avarice. Dieu résolut le problème en jetant Lucifer sous la terre et en plaçant l’énorme roc de la Vierge dessus ! Depuis, le Malin se débat pour sortir et fait ainsi jaillir des eaux chauffées et chargées en soufre au contact de l’enfer…..
…… L’origine de ces eaux thermales serait plus probablement volcanique…..
(*L’Oriège : son nom pourrait venir d’ « Oriega » (qui charrie de l’or) – etymologie discutée).
Quelques détails historiques.
Au carrefour des vallées, idéalement placée sur la route allant de Toulouse à Barcelone, Ax attirait toutes sortes de voyageurs : marchands, muletiers, soldats, comédiens - mais aussi malandrins, mendiants et tireurs de bourse !
Toulouse et Barcelone étant deux grandes villes de drapiers du 12e au 18e siècle, les corporations des tisserands et des marchands s’épanouirent à Ax. C’est parmi eux que se recrutèrent la plupart des cathares du 12e au 14e siècle. Entre 1296 et 1310, Ax fut même un centre important de cette église interdite, grâce à l’engagement de l’un de ses fils, le notaire Pierre Authier, brûlé à Toulouse en 1310.

Nous vous conseillons de passer à l’Office de Tourisme demander (entre autres) ce livret : « Itinéraire de découverte à travers la ville d’Ax-Les-Thermes », qui nous a servi pour la rédaction de ce descriptif !
Attention : cet itinéraire ne vous aidera pas pour notre quête du "trésor" ! Bon Géocaching !

This multi-stage cache will lead you through the 7 hot springs of Ax-Les-Thermes (23 ° to 74 °) whose free access is part of the immemorial rights of the inhabitants of this town. They are part of the listed 63 springs giving a production of up to one million and a half litres a day!

Where do these hot springs come from?
The explanation given by the legend could be interesting:
In fact, the gold which is said to be found in the form of flakes in the Oriège * (one of three rivers that flow in Ax-Les-Thermes) was a gift from God to the inhabitants of Ax. They were corrupted by the Devil who taught them temptation and greed. God solved the problem by throwing Lucifer underground and bringing the huge rock of the Virgin on it! Since then, the Devil has been struggling to emerge and thus makes hot water loaded with hell sulfur spurt out .....
... ... The origin of these thermal waters is most likely volcanic ... ..

Some historical details.
At the crossroads of the valleys, ideally placed on the road from Toulouse to Barcelona, Ax attracted all kinds of travelers: merchants, muleteers, soldiers, actors - but also rogues, beggars and pickpockets!
Toulouse and Barcelona were two great cities of drapers from the 12th to the 18th century, and the guilds of weavers and merchants flourished in Ax. It was among them that were recruited most of the Cathars from the 12th to 14th century. Between 1296 and 1310, Ax was even an important centre of that banned church, thanks to the commitment of one of its sons, notary Pierre Authier, burned in Toulouse in 1310.

A discovery tour is offered by the municipality of Ax-Les-Thermes: for children and adults, 14 interpretive signs to discover its past while strolling about this beautiful city! (See scan of the tour: photo 1) It is worth a long visit!
We recommend you go to the Tourist Office to ask (among others) the booklet "Discovery tour through Ax-Les-Thermes”, which we used for writing this description!
