Ist entstanden durch Unterwaschungen und Unterspülungen des oberen Burgsandsteins (Mittl. Sst.-Keuper, Nor). Die Halbhöhlen und Felsabstürze mit einer Höhe von bis zu 20 m erstrecken sich über eine Länge von etwa ??? m und sind 50 m breit.
Die Keuperzeit
Die geologische Formation der „Trias“ (vor 250 bis 203 Millionen Jahren) ist in Deutschland weiter verbreitet als jede andere. Sie hat ihren Namen von der Dreiteilung in Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk und Keuper. Das Klima war damals überwiegend trocken und wüstenhaft. Erst gegen Ende der Keuper-Zeit wurde es langsam feuchter. Die Gegend um Nürnberg lag zu dieser Zeit am östlichen Rand eines flachen kontinentalen Beckens, das an das „Böhmisch-Vindelizische Hochland“ grenzte. Von dort her schütteten Flüsse große Mengen an Sand in das Becken. Dieser Teil des Keupers wird daher als „Sandsteinkeuper“ bezeichnet.
Entstehung von Burgsandstein
Der Burgsandstein entstand vor etwa 215 Millionen Jahren während der Zeit des Mittleren Keupers (Obere Trias). Das zu dieser Zeit herrschende Klima war trocken und schon fast wüstenhaft. Die Verwitterung und Abtragung (Erosion) im südöstlich gelegenen Vindelizisch-Böhmischen Hochland war aufgrund einer spärlichen oder sogar fehlenden Vegetation dementsprechend intensiv. Der Ablagerungsraum war damals ein flaches, großes Becken, das sogenannte Germanische Becken. Periodisch anschwellende Flüsse lieferten große Mengen an Sand und Schlamm, die inSchwemmfächern und weiten sandigen Flussebenen abgelagert wurden. Die Sande wurden später zu Sandsteinen verfestigt und aus dem Schlamm entstanden Tonsteine (Letten). Die Sandsteine weisen oft eine Schrägschichtung auf, die Aussagen über die Schüttungsrichtung ermöglichen. Quellschluchten sind durch ein besonderes Kleinklima gekennzeichnet. Das ganze Jahr über herrscht gleichmäßig hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit und eine gute Wasserversorgung der Böden. Die typische Waldgesellschaft der steilen,feucht-schattigen Berghänge ist der Schluchtwald. Wo der Wald nicht mehr Fuß fassen kann , auf den offenen anstehenden Sandsteinfelsen, beginnt ein ganz anderer Lebensraum- das ist der Bereich der Farne, Moose, Algen, Flechten und Pilze.

Folgt dem Weg der links um die Schlucht führt, (Weißes Rechteck mit grünem Punkt) Bei den Koordinaten N49°11.272 E010°55.947 findet ihr ein Schild das Euch den Weg nach Unten in die Schlucht zeigt.Von da aus könnt Ihr die ganze Schlucht bis zum Ausgang wieder zurücklaufen.
Es wird davon abgeraten, die Schlucht mit Strassen - oder Turnschuhen zu betreten, da der Weg sehr schwierig zu begehen ist. Vorallem bei nassem Wetter und Schnee. Es führen zwar kleine Brücken über das Wasser, allerdings müßt Ihr auch über Felsen und Baumwurzeln steigen.
Logbedingungen:
1. Macht unten in der Schlucht,( am Ende der Treppe mit dem Geländer), ein Bild von Euch und Eurem GPS mit der Felswand im Hintergrund.( Optional) ,wäre aber trotzdem schön)
2. Auf dem Weg durch die Schlucht begegnen Euch mehrere kleine weiße rechteckige Schilder mit einem Tier darauf. Welches Tier seht Ihr dort??(Update 2021:Es gibt leider nur noch ein Schild,welches sich in der Schlucht an einem Baum befindet.Wenn ihr die Schlucht ganz nach oben lauft findet ihr rechterhand noch eines an einem Baum .)/p>

The Massendorfer Canyon

The Keupertime
The geologic formation the "Trias" (before from 250 to 203 millions To years) is spread in Germany as everybody other. She has her name of the trisection in New red sandstone, mussel lime and Keuper. The climate was then predominantly drily and desert. Only against It became an end of the Keuper time slowly more humid. The area around Nuremberg one lay at this time with the eastern edge flatten of continental washbasin, to the „Böhmisch-Vindelizische Highland“ bordered. From there here rivers poured large amounts in sand in the washbasin. This part of the Keupers hence, it is called "Sandsteinkeuper".
Origin of castle sandstone
The castle sandstone originated before about 215 Millions years during the time Middle Keupers (upper Trias). To of this time ruling climate was dry and already almost desert. The decomposition and demolition (erosion) in southeast situated Vindelizisch-Böhmischen Highland was on account of a scanty one or even missing vegetation accordingly intensely. At that time the deposition space was one flat, big washbasin, the so-called Germanic washbasins. Periodically swelling ones Rivers delivered big ones Amounts in sand and mud, inSchwemmfächern and widen to sandy ones River levels were deposited. The sand were hardened later to sandstones and from the mud originated Sound stones (Latvian). The sandstones point often a sloping stratification on, the statements about the pouring direction allow. Source Canyons are marked by a special small climate. All year round there rules steadily high air humidity and a good water supply of the grounds. The typical forest society of the precipitous, humid-shady mountain slopes is the gulch wood. Where the wood any more cannot gain a foothold, on the open one upcoming sandstone rocks, quite an other living space begins this is the area of the ferns, mosses, algae, lichens and mushrooms.

Follow the way of the left side around the Canyon leads, ( White rectangle with green point ) You are found with the coordinates N49°11.272 E010°55.947 a sign the way after Below in the Canyon points. From there from you can walk back the whole Canyon up to the exit again. It is advised Dringends against entering the Canyon with streets - or sneakers, because against committing very difficultly the way is. Above all, in wet weather and snow. Though small bridges about the water lead it, indeed, you must also rise about rock and tree roots.
