Geocache Description:

A Picnic in the Gardens

Saturday, 14th November 2009, From 09h30 to 14h00

This will be an opportunity to get out and about and back to nature in a most beautiful place - the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden - and get to meet and mingle with fellow geocachers.

It would be great to spend some time with you so if you are able to, pop round and come picnic with us.

We will meet at 09h30 in the Arboretum (good shade there) which is about a 300m walk from the main entrance.

You are welcome to come at any time. We do plan to do some caching while picnicing. MrsGEO936 (Silvia) will stay at the picnic spot with Enzo and Nadia, so if you would like to do the same, you can leave your cooler boxes, chairs, blankets, etc. with Silvia for safe keeping.

This will be a very simple and relaxed Event, and it would be awesome to see as many of you as possible (both from far and near)!

The published co-ordinates for this event will take you to the Arboretum of the Gardens.

To get to the Arboretum
, proceed through the main entrance and follow the main path towards the waterfall until the start of the rock/geological garden on your right hand side. At the start of the rock garden, the path will fork. Keeping right, follow the path until a bridge (Lions Bridge) presents itself on your right hand side. Cross the bridge and go left into the Arboretum. The Arboretum is a large area which has lots of trees and green grass. If you reach the restaurant from the main path, then you have gone too far!

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

  • This beautiful Garden is a haven of fauna and flora. It is also home to the only surburban breeding pair of Verreaux Eagle (Black Eagle).
  • The Garden is open everyday from 08h00 to 18h00. You can read up about it at this link: http://www.sanbi.org/frames/sisulufram.htm
  • Entrance fees are: R23.00 per adult; R13.00 per student (with valid student card); R7.00 per scholar (children). Children under 6 years old and Botanical Society members (with valid BotSoc card) have free entry.
  • There is a restaurant at the Gardens called Eagle Fayre (Tel: 082 671 8382) also has a tuckshop where drinks and snacks can be purchased.
  • Please Note: These Gardens follow a "Carry-in Carry-out" litter policy. There are therefore NO DUSTBINS in the Gardens itself. Whatever you bring into the Gardens you have to take home with you. They also don't allow balls, kiddie scooters/bikes, etc. - they will tell you at the main entrance!
