Les avis sont partagés sur la destination précise de ce monument gallo-romain.
Il pourrait s’agir d’une borne militaire, où étaient indiquées les distances chiffrées en milles, de Rome jusqu’au grandes villes de l’Empire. Un mille romain (mille pas) valait 1 472,5 mètres.
Mais cet édifice était plus probablement un mausolée, élevé pour contenir les cendres d’un personnage important de Labarthe. Les Romains incinéraient leurs morts, et les monuments funéraires bordaient les voies, à l’extérieur des cités et lieux d’habitation.
Nous sommes ici sur la voie romaine qui allait de Toulouse jusqu’à Dax, en passant par Lugdunum Convenarum (St Bertrand de Comminges), situé à 11 km de Labarthe.

Opinions are divided on the precise use of the Gallo-Roman monument.
It could be a military milestone, on which numerical distances in miles were given: numerical distances from Rome to the great cities of the Empire. A Roman mile (a thousand steps) was worth 1,472.5 meters.
But this building was most probably a mausoleum, built to contain the ashes of an important person from Labarthe. The Romans cremated their dead and tombstones lined the tracks, outside cities and residential areas.
We are here on the Roman road which ran from Toulouse to Dax, via Lugdunum Convenarum (St. Bertrand de Comminges), located 11 km from Labarthe.
