Geocache Description:

It is called the halfway but it’s not exactly located one half the way in elevation or distance since that point is unfortunately within the wilderness area where caches aren’t allowed.


The actual halfway point on the trail at 3.2 miles and 4200 ft elevation: N47 26.341 W121 23.666

Instead the cache is placed at the next reasonable location outside the wilderness boundary which happens to be about 500 higher and 0.7 miles further along the trail, let’s say just around 61% of the way in distance and 71% in elevation to the Katwalk. Good news if heading in as you’re closer then the cache name implies, not so good news on the way back.

To reach the cache you’ll need to leave the trail. The first and shortest route is also the most difficult as it will involve some steep terrain. A relatively much easier route occurs along the ridge line about a quarter of a mile up the trail. Or you can do what I did and take the short way to the cache and then follow the ridge line to reconnect with the PCT.

The cache is a non-camouflaged lock-n-lock on top of a 5’ tall broken off tree stump at the high point at the end of the little ridge line. It’s elevated to allow winter searchers an opportunity to find it when the snow gets deeper. The trade off for increased winter access is that it’s quite visible from a distance; though that shouldn’t be an issue has I doubt muggles will find their way near.
