Geocache Description:

Zminku o harpyjich pak najdeme take v Danteho Bozske komedii.

Hapies are mythological creatures from Greek mythology described as birds with women's head and breast. They are mentioned in several antient myths but they origin leads to the myth about Phineas. Phineas was punished by Zeus and harpies were sent to steal, grab and destroy all the food Phineas wanted to eat. From that myth probably comes the greek name for those creatures that means "to snatch".

Later in the Middle Ages was the picture of harpies slightly changed. They played their roles in many superstitions and rumors as the evil creatures. Also his look has changed and they were describer always as ugly winged women with ugly old faces and sometimes even with big noses or beaks. In Dante's Inferno they stay in wood in the second ring of hell where the souls of people who committed suicide are tortured.

Harpies belong also to the fantasy literature of today and they are pictures consistently with the rumors of the Middle Ages. They are always shown as the evil creatures living in the settlements or often nests situated at the top of the trees or often isolated rocks towering above their surroundings.

Zeleznice Hlucin - Petrkovice - Chalupki

Existence teto zeleznicni trate nebyla bohuzel prilis dlouha.

Jednou z dominant stare trate z Hlucina do Petrkovic byl bezesporu ocelovy zeleznicni most postaveny pres udoli obce Petrkovice.

Railway Hlucin - Petrkovice - Chalupki

The existence of aforementioned railroad track unfortunately was not too long. The building of the track begun befor 1920 and the first part (from Hlucin to Petrkovice) was opened already in 1920. The first plans for the connection of Hlucin (and Petrkovice) with Annaberg (today called Chalupki) in Poland were not very eficient. However, the railroad track has been finished but it was never used for regular railway traffic. On the other hand a new train station Petrkovice - doly (Petrkovice - mines) was build in the area behind the former hospital in Petrkovice approximately in 1927.

The major part of the railway has been destroyed during the Second World War and so the public (and goods) transport continued only between Hlucin and Petrkovice - doly stations. The tram line has been established between Hlucin and Cerny potok in Ostrava in the fiftieth of the last century. This tramway line has been functional until 1982 where the railway traffic between Hlucin and Petrkovice has been stopped and railway track dismantled. The railway embarkment has been adjusted in the following years and reused for the road number 56 between Ostrava and Hlucin.

One of the dominants of the old railroad track from Hlucin to Petrkovice was indeed the steel railway bridge situated over the valley of Petrkovice village. The bridge itself was destroyed by the retreating German army at the end of the Second World War but the pillars of the bridge are still standing still in the middle of Petrkovice village.
