Geocache Description:

The cache has been placed in the open area that can be viewed from the Southdowns shopping centre.

The area has been named as Luton Valley Bird Sanctuary and is a joint project between the City of Tshwane, Nature Conservation and the Community, aimed at retaining some form of natural environment in the midst of the rapidly developing urbanization taking place in the area. The area will be left as a “wetland” that will help to reduce the negative effects of storm water flow, caused by urbanization. A project plan for the activities required to ensure that the area becomes a sanctuary for birds and small animals has been drawn up and since the start of the project in 2007, steady progress has been made with the implementation. Further information can be found on the internet here

Note the sanctuary gate times have changed due to Covid 19:

They are open everyday from 9:00 - 14:00 during Level 1 lockdown. This may change depending on the level of lockdown.

A large variety of bird life can be seen and once the 15 year old dam is refurbished, the water bird population should increase. Over and above the birds, rabbits, hares and meerkats have also been seen and residents from neighbouring residential areas have been seen feeding the wildlife and birds on an “ad hoc” basis.

The cache container which is a small rectangular plastic container has been placed about 15m from one of the many tracks in the reserve. The contents include a FTF GeoCoin that is starting its travels from this cache.

FTF honours go to Wormgeocash. Congratulations!! and thanks for starting our FTF GeoCoin on its travels.
