Geocache Description:

This is part 5 of the Castle Hedingham De Vere Trail C. The cache is a small and the site is accessed by a packed path but the incline is pretty steep. This area is the site of several old clay pits, and there are steep drops both sides of the path so please be careful. The GPS co-ordinates may not be very accurate here as the tree cover is quite dense, the hint should help though.

The De Vere trail C is the third in a series placed around Castle Hedingham, the village I grew up in. The first series took you round the Colne Valley Railway, the second went around Hedingham Castle, and this third series takes you south of the village on a circular walk; crossing the old Colne Valley & Halstead Railway, climbing from the river valley around 40 ft up towards Purls Hill past the clay pits, and back down Aldeford St towards the village. Suggested parking for this trail is at the Memorial Hall (n51 59.379 e0 35.845). The series consists of 10 caches with a clue in each cache, which gives you the location of the final bonus puzzle cache. Just while laying this series out we saw a muntjac deer and a fox (in the same field at the same time!) and there are some lovely views north to the castle. WARNING: There are some small road sections on this trail with no footpath, but these are minor roads with very little traffic.
