Geschützt durch eine über 400m² große Halle erleben Sie das weltgrößte fossile Austernriff!
Die Grundlage für dieses wohl einmalige Naturphänomen entstand im Miozän. In dieser Zeit war im Gebiet des jetzigen Korneuburg in Niederösterreich ein tropisches Meer - auch bekannt als Paratethys. Mit Paratethys wird der "europäische" Teil des erdgeschichtlichen Ozeans Tethys bezeichnet. Sie entstand im späten Jura, als sich der Superkontinent Pangaea in die Kontinente Laurasia und Gondwana teilte. Sie erstreckte sich im Tertiär während der alpinen Gebirgsbildung vom Rhône-Gebiet bis zum Aralsee.
Dieses Randmeer, das in der Kreidezeit fast das ganze heutige Europa bedeckt hatte, und ausgedehnte Flachwassergebiete aufwies, verlandete allmählich im späten Miozän als Folge der Aufwerfung der Alpen, Pyrenäen, Karpaten und Apenninen. Die Reste dieses Miozänmeeres sind das Schwarze Meer, das Kaspische Meer und der Aralsee. Im Bereich des heutigen Wiener Beckens und des Balaton entstand ein Brackwasser-See, der Pannon. Die Donau floss über Krems und Hollabrunn Richtung Osten, und Mündete in ausgedehnten Mangrovenwäldern im Gebiet von Korneuburg bis Mistelbach in den Pannon. Mitten in diesem Gebiet aus Brackwasser und Mangrovenwäldern liegt heute die Gemeinde Stetten.
Hier herrschten ideale Bedingungen für eine Pflanzen- und Tierwelt, die wir heute nicht mehr vermuten würden. Diese Gegebenheiten und auch so manche Naturkatastrophe, wie ein gigantischer Tsunami, schafften die Voraussetzungen für die Entstehung des einmaligen Austernriffs.
Rund um die ca. 15.000 bestens präparierten Riesenaustern präsentiert Ihnen eine Multimedia Show die besonderen Ereignisse, die zur Entstehung dieses gigantischen Riffs geführt haben. Riesige Tsunamis, Kälte- und Hitzeperioden sowie die "Arbeit" der urzeitlichen Tiere führen zu dieser Weltsensation.
Im einzigartigen Museumsbereich können Sie viele verschiedene Exponate besichtigen. Das Leben im seinerzeitigen Meer und der Spaziergang am Strand wird durch einmalige Fundstücke wie Zähne, Knochen und Panzer von Delphinen, Haifischen und Schildkröten oder einen versteinerten Baumstamm dargestellt. Der Star des Museumsbereiches und gleichzeitig der Sensationsfund von Stetten ist die größte fossile Perle der Welt. Diese Perle ist nicht nur der größte, sondern auch einer der ältesten "Muschelschätze".

1.) Wie alt ist das Austernriff in etwa?
2.) In der Fossilienwelt findest du eine Zeitskala der Erde. Wie breit ist ca. der Abschnitt dargestellt, in welchem der Mensch vorkommt?
3.) Wieviele verschiedene fossile Tier- und Planzenarten wurden bei den Grabungen entdeckt?

You can experience die world's biggest fossile oyster reef - protected by a hall with over 400m² size!
The basis for this unique phenomenon of nature was generated in Miozän. In this time the region around the present city of Korneuburg in Lower Austria was a tropical sea - the Paratethys. Paratethys is the european part of the geological ocean Tethys. It emerged in late Jura as the super-continent Pangaea splitted in the continents of Laurasia and Gondwana. It had its biggest expansation in the tertiary during the alpine orogenesis from the Rhône-region to the Aral sea.
This marginal sea which covered in Cretaceous most of modern Europe with huge areas of shallow water silted up in late Miocene as a result of the orogenesis of the Alps, Pyrenees and Carparthians. The remains of this Miocene sea are the Black Sea, the Caspic Sea and the Aral Sea. In the area of todays Vienna Basin and Lake Balaton there emerged a huge brackish water lake - the Pannon. The river Danube flew over Krems and Hollabrunn eastwards and ended in the area between Korneuburg to Mistelbach into the Pannon. In the middle of this brackish waters and large mangrove forests lies todays commune Stetten and the fossile Reef.
In this area have been general living conditions for fauna and flora which we would not imagine today. These circumstances and also some catastrophies - like a gigantic tsunami - caused the preconditions for the formation of this unique oyster reef.
About 15.000 perfectly primed gigant oysters are presented with a multimedia show which explains the living conditions which caused this huge reef.
In the museum area you can see many parts of different fossile animals. The life in this ancient sea is presented through finds like teeth, bones and carapaces of sharks, dolphins and turtles or with a petrified tree. The main attraction of this sightseeing place is the worlds biggest fossile pearl! It is not only the biggest but also one of the eldest shell treasures ever found!
To log this cache, attach a photo of you in front of the lookout-tower (this now have become optional because of the new guidelines) and answer the following questions:
1.) How old is the oyster reef?
2.) In the fossile world you will find a timeline. How big is the part presented where the humanity occured?
3.) How many different fossile animal and plant species were found during the excavations?
