VŠB-TU Ostrava navazuje v prímé kontinuite na cinnost montážního ucilište, Bánské akademie a VŠB v Príbrami. V širších historických souvislostech však vychází již z tradic montážní výuky v ceských zemích.
K obnove montážní výuky v ceských zemích došlo až v polovine 19. století, kdy byla na základe císarského dekretu z 23. 1. 1849 zrízena dve montánní ucilište v Príbrami a Leobenu. Zajištovala, po predbežném absolutoriu prípravných studií na univerzitách ci polytechnikách, dvouleté speciální studium hornických a hutnických predmetu.
V roce 1865 získalo montánní ucilište v Príbrami oznacení Bánská akademie. Další vydávané statuty nasvedcovaly, že proces smeroval k uznání Bánské akademie jakožto plnoprávné vysoké školy. V roce 1904 došlo k zavedení dvou státních zkoušek, k získání práva promocního udelováním titulu Dr. mont. a k rozšírení funkcí rektora, jemuž byl priznán tradicní titul Magnificence. Nový název školy Vysoká škola bánská odpovídal jejímu významu. V letech 1918 - 1938 vychovávala montážní odborníky jako jediná vysoká škola v CSR. V roce 1945 byla prestehována do Ostravy a zacátkem padesátých let se zacala clenit na jednotlivé fakulty.
Od roku 1989 Vysoká škola bánská - Technická univerzita Ostrava uskutecnuje ve vazbe na strukturální zmeny svou transformaci na moderní Technickou univerzitu s plnohodnotnou nabídkou studia na Ekonomické fakulte.V prubehu uplynulých 13 let vznikly 3 nové fakulty, Fakulta elektrotechniky a informatiky, Fakulta stavební a Fakulta bezpecnostního inženýrství.
Univerzita má více než 20 tisíc studentu na sedmi fakultách:

- Fakulta elektrotechniky a informatiky
- Hornicko-geologická fakulta
- Fakulta metalurgie a materiálového inženýrství

VSB-TU Ostrava extends activities of the original training centre, the Mining Academy and the Mining University in Príbram. This kind of education was renewed in the Czech lands in the mid 19th century, when there were two training centres founded in Príbram and Leoben by the Emperor’s Decree of 23 January 1849.
The training centre in Príbram received the name Mining Academy in 1865. The consequently issued statuses suggest that the process was going in the direction of recognition of the Mining Academy as a fully-fledged university. In 1904, there were two state examinations implemented, which provided for the granting of the title Dr. mont. and the extension of rector’s rights, who could use the traditional title "Magnificence". The new name of the Mining University corresponded with the importance of this institution. In the period 1918 - 1938, the university trained mining specialists as the only university in Czechoslovakia. In 1945, the University moved to Ostrava and at the beginning of the 1950s it started to be divided into individual faculties.
After 1989, the Mining University - Technical University of Ostrava has been transformed into a modern technical university with the full offer of studies in the Faculty of Economy. There have been three new faculties founded during the past 13 years: the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Faculty of Civil Engineering, and the Faculty of Safety Engineering.
The university has more than 20 thousand students who study at seven university faculties:
