Geocache Description:

Church Micro 898 Wye Parish -St.Gregory and St. Martin
Another in the Church Micro series.

There has been a Church at Wye since Saxon times and this early building was mentioned in the Domesday Book.
In 1572 Lightning struck the steeple and it remained unstable untill in 1686 it collapsed destroying the chancel, the entire east end of the church ,transpets and the old memorials, after temporary repair the church war rebuilt during the time of Queen Anne.

The church has ten ringing bells. Two treble bells were added to the existing bells to celebrate the new millenium. They were given in memory of three parishioners and the full set of bells rang for the first time on 31st December 1999.

In 1943, a bomb destroyed the west window which was replaced in 1951 by a new window with an agricultural theme.
Have a look at the Huge grave stone that covers the Crypt of the Sawbridge family.

If anybody would like to expand the Church Micro series please do,
we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names,
to avoid duplication.
