Geocache Description:

At this site there is a carving commemorating the workmen, or navvies, who built the Union Canal in the 19th Century, carved from an Elm tree by sculptor Robert Coia.

Controversial? You'd think not, until you realise that the pair depicted are Burke &Hare who both worked on the Union Canal during it's construction. Both men were Irish "navvies" who arrived in Edinburgh to work on the construction of the canal. They would later join forces in Edinburgh, and murder their victims to sell to Dr Knox for his "Anatomy School". When finally caught Hare was offered immunity from prosecution, if he agreed to give evidence against Burke. He accepted and Burke was duly hung for his crimes. Hare was released and immediately left Edinburgh, never to return.

More about the pair's grizzly exploits can be found by doing this cache (GC6AA9).
