Londorfer Basaltlava
Londorfer Basaltlava, ist ein vulkanitisches Gestein, das im Gebiet
seines Vorkommens auch Londorfer Lungstein genannt wird.
Die Londorfer Basaltlava wird in Rabenau-Londorf abgebaut.
Diese Basaltlava entstand im Miozän.
Die Basaltlava ist dicht- bis feinkörnig und porös.
Das poröse Gefüge entstand durch eingeschlossene Gase
eines basischen Lavastroms in Blasenform.
Teilweise sind größere Poren vorhanden.
Der Porenraum beträgt 16 Prozent.
Das Gestein besteht aus 47 Prozent Plagioklas,
26 Prozent Augit, 14 Prozent Olivin, 10 Prozent opake
Minerale
und aus weiteren undefinierbaren kryptokristallinen
Bestandteilen.
Seine Textur ist richtungslos.
Durch seine exzellenten technischen Eigenschaften und
weil er hochgradig verwitterungsresistent ist,
wurde er ab dem Jahre 1952 vom Kölner Dombaumeister Willy Weyres am
Kölner Dom
als Ersatzstein für auszutauschende Werksteine bis ins Jahr 1998
verwendet.
Da der Earthcache

einer meiner Lieblingsearthcaches ist, dachte ich mir,
einen wichtigen Teil dieser Location, dem Londorfer Basalt, einen
eigenen Earthcache zu widmen.
Es ist leider nicht möglich direkt am Steinbruch einen
eindrucksvollen Blick
bezüglich diesem „berühmten“ Lungstein zu zeigen.
Vielmehr zeigt der Dom der Rabenau die besonderen Eigenschaften
dieses Gesteins.
Diese Basaltlava ist frost- und hochverschleißfest, sowie nicht
polierfähig.
Aus Londorfer Basaltlava wurde diese Kirche erbaut.
Wenn man die Kirche durch den Turmeingang betritt,
fällt der Blick zuerst auf den Altar aus Lungstein, zu dem drei
Stufen hinaufführen.
Im Mittelschiff, links vom Mittelgang, steht der aus Lungstein
gehauene zwölfeckige Taufstein.

Diese Basaltlava hat eine besondere Eigenschaft, sie wird niemals
richtig schwarz.
Wie würdest Du die Farbe dieses besonderen Gesteins
beschreiben?
Wie hoch sind ca. die einzelnen Gesteine, die für den Bau verwendet
wurden?
Welche Höhe zeigt Dein GPS an diesem Ort?

Londorfer basalt lava
Londorfer basalt lava is a vulcanic rock,
which is also called in the area of its occurrence as "Londorfer
Lungstein".
The Londorfer basalt lava is mined in Rabenau Londorf.
This basalt lava developed in the Miocene.
The basalt lava is compact to fine-grained and porously.
The porous structure resulted from enclosed gases
of a basic lava stream in blister form.
Larger pores are partly present.
The pore area amounts about 16 percent.
The rock consists of 47 percent of plagioclase, 26 percent of
augite,
14 percent olivine, 10 percent of opaque minerals and of further
indefinable cryptocrystalline components.
Its texture is directionless.
By its excellent technical characteristics
and because it is high-grade decomposition resistant,
it was used by the Cologne cathedral master Willy Weyres
starting in the year 1952 as an alternative stone for exchanging
cut stones
of the Cologne cathedral till the year 1998.

is one of my all time favorite earthcache locations,
I imagined to dedicate an important part of this location,
the “Londorfer basalt”, its own earthcache.
Unfortunately it is not possible to show directly at the quarry an
impressive view of the famous “Lungstein”.
Rather the cathedral of Rabenau shows the special characteristics
of this rock.
This basalt lava is frost- and highly wear-resistent as well as not
polishingable.
This cathedral was built of Londorfer basalt lava.
If one enters the church by the tower entrance, the view falls
first on the altar of “Lungstein”.
In the central ship, left of the center aisle, the twelve-angular
baptistery made of “Lungstein” can be located.
