Hard but beautiful hike with a fantastic view on the "Ribeira do Tarrafal"!
Because of the long and hard trip to Tarrafal, which is the starting point of the hike to the cache, I changed the difficulty and the terrain rating. It is now a 5/5 rated cache.

Cabo Verde belongs to the African continent and builds together with the Acores, Madeira and the Canary Islands a group of islands known as Macaronesia. The islands of Macaronesia are volcanic in origin, and you can find a lot of interesting geomorphologic specifics.
Santo Antao is entirely made up of volcanic material and its mountains are composed of basalt. The structure of Santo Antao is dominated by enormous and steep basalt mountains, which are divided by large dry valleys (Ribeiras). These valleys where made by drain of rainwater during the volcanic genesis. The Ribeiras or arroyos are one of those geographic features of Cabo Verde and you´ll find plenty Ribeiras at Santo Antao.
In these Dry Valleys you`ll find no, or only very few water. Nevertheless on the windward side (luff side) of the island there exists a lot of agriculture in the Riberas with water from groundwater and springs. However the whole lee side of Santa Antao is completely dry. On exception is the Ribeira do Tarrafal.
The Ribeira do Tarrafal is fed by a spring and in the valley you´ll find intensive agriculture. Years ago the spring used to be so powerful, that Mindelo (Sao Vicente) was watered by this spring.
The way to Tarrafal is very hard and you can`t visit this place on a daytrip. But you`ll find a beautiful accommodation (“Mar Tranquilidade” N 16° 57.224; W 025°18.547), where you can relax for a view days.
The coordinates will guide you to the end of a beautiful but hard climb out of the valley. You´ll need to bring a lot of water for this hike. You can combine the Tour with a downhill walk on the dusty road across the “volcanic moonscape”. After the hike you can enjoy a refreshing bath in the Atlantic Ocean.

Cabo Verde gehört geografisch zu Afrika und bildet mit den Azoren, Madeira und den Kanaren die Inselgemeinschaft Makaronesien. Die vulkanische Entstehungsgeschichte prägt die gesamte Oberflächenstruktur der Inseln und führte zu eine Vielzahl geomorphologischer Besonderheiten auf. Cabo Verdes sind hierbei die Ribeiras oder Trockentäler.
Santo Antao ist geprägt durch eine vulkanische Berglandschaft, deren Hauptbestandteil Basalt ist. Die Struktur von Santo Antao, bei der riesige steile Basaltgebilde durch tief eingeschnittene Täler getrennt wurden, entstand schon während der Vulkantätigkeit, bei der flüssige Lava die Landschaft formte.
Heute ist Santo Antao ist geprägt durch eine Vielzahl von Trockentäler. Hierbei handelt es sich um Täler, in denen es keine oder nur sehr geringe Wasservorkommen gibt. Dennoch existiert in den Trockentälern auf der Luvseite der Insel eine intensive Landwirtschaft, die sich aus Quellen und dem Grundwasser der Täler speist. Die Leeseite der Insel ist jedoch durch absolute Trockenheit geprägt. Eine Ausnahme bildet die Ribeira do Tarrafal.
Die Ribeira do Tarrafal wird von einer Quelle gespeist, so dass im Tal intensive Landwirtschaft möglich ist. Früher war die Quelle sogar so wasserreich, dass das Wasser aus der Quelle dazu genutzt wurde, Mindelo auf der Nachbarinsel Sao Vicente zu versorgen.
Der Weg nach Tarrafal ist sehr anstrengend und nicht als Tagestour machbar. Dafür gibt es im Ort Tarrafal gibt es eine tolle Unterkunft („Mar Tranquilidade“ N 16° 57.224; W 025°18.547), in der man wunderbar für ein paar Tage relaxen kann.
Die angegebenen Koordinaten bezeichnen das Ende eines tollen aber anstrengenden Aufstiegs aus dem Talgrund. Für die Wanderung solltet ihr unbedingt ausreichend Wasser mitnehmen. Mit dem Abstieg über die staubige Piste durch die vulkanische Mondlandschaft, könnt ihr die Wanderung zu einer wirklich schönen Rundwanderung kombinieren und euch auf ein erfrischendes Bad m Atlantik freuen.
Um den Cache zu loggen müsst ihr ein Foto von euch mit GPS Gerät an den angegebenen Koordinaten machen und hochlanden. Zusätzlich müsst ihr folgende Frage beantworten:
An den Koordinaten habt ihr die gesamte Steilwand erklommen und blickt in das Ribeira do Tarrafal und auf der anderen auf die „ vulkanische Mondlandschaft“. Auf welcher Höhe befindet ihr euch?

Blickt ihr in Richtung der „Mondlandschaft“, erblickt ihr dort in der Nähe der Küste eine markante Sehenswürdigkeit die sich deutlich von der „Mondlandschaft“ abhebt.
