Diese kleine Reihe von Earthcaches soll euch mit einem Teil der Erdgeschichte bei Herrenberg vertraut machen.
Das geologische Profil in der Gegend um Herrenberg ist recht vielfältig und durch unterschiedliche Einflüsse entstanden. Neben harten, zerklüfteten und wasserdurchlässigem Gestein wie Kalken und Sandsteinen gibt es weichere und wasserundurchlässigere Mergel- und Tonschichten, die in der Regel schneller abgetragen werden und verwittern. Auch an dieser Stelle gibt es verschiedenfarbige Mergelschichten, die durch Ablagerungen und Windanwehungen entstanden sind. Ihre Mächtigkeit liegt hier bei 25 bis 30 Metern. Das Besondere ist hier, dass an dieser Stelle eine Mergelschicht am Wegesrand zu sehen ist, die nicht so leicht wie die anderen verwittert. Teilweise sind hier auch Knollen oder Linsen von Berggips erhalten. Auf den Schichten liegen als Bodenbedeckung schlechte Wiesen und Wald.
a) Wie lang (in Metern und Zentimetern ) ist der sichtbare Abschnitt der Mergelschicht an den Koordinaten?
b) Welche Farbe hat die Mergelschicht, die ihr seht?

This little series of earthcaches is meant to let you learn a little about earth’s history around Herrenberg.
The geological profile around Herrenberg is manifold and was formed by different powers of nature. Next to hard, cliffy and permeable to water-being beds of sandstone and lime there are softer and not so permeable to water-being beds of clay and marl. They normally are ablated or alterated relatively fast. At the position you are led to by the coordinates, there are beds of multicolored marl, that have been made by deposition and wind-blow, whose depth is between 25 and 30 meters. The special feature is, that you can see a bed of marl next to the way you are walking on, that is much more resistant against ablation and alteration than the others. There are also bulbs and lenses of gypsum preserved. As canopy there are bad meadows and woods.

a) How long (in meters and centimeters) is the visible part of the bed ?
b) Which colors has the bed you see here?
