Omalos Plateau is situated in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). It is in the shape of an irregular circle, approximately 4 kilometres in diameter and 15 sq. km in surface. Almost in the centre of it lies the small settlement of Omalos (39 kms. from Chania).
There are three entrancies to the Plateau: In the North from the village of Lakkoi - Chania, in the South from Sfakia, called Xyloskalo, which is the beginning of Samaria Gorge, and in the West from Selino county, the area of Sougia.
As a result of its inaccessibility and its naturally fortified position, the area has served as a base of operations and a refuge for revolutionary fighters many times during the island's history. It’s also depicted in the very popular folk song Pote tha kani xasteria.
At the Xyloskalo ridge, at an altitude of 1227 m, there is the entrance to Samaria Gorge. It offers a terrace with breathtaking view over the gorge and the mountains around. A walking path leading to Kallerghi Refuge in 1.5 hours starts there too.
The cache is in the first 100 m of this path, about 20 m higher in altitude. It’s a small plastic container wrapped in a plastic bag. It contains a pen, a logbook, the FTF certificate, the geocaching note and some goodies to trade.
As it’s on the path and it’s visible from the parking place and the cafeteria opposite, special precautions for muggles are required. Mind also that it is well hidden again when you leave.
