We recently learned we will be moving from the state. If anyone can take this cache, it will prevent it from being archived if something should happen. Please contact us if you're interested. The cache is a camoed 35mm
It is a rather long drive up to the Mt Sunflower cache and while on the way out we spied a marker beside the road and stopped to take a look at it. The limestone post engraved with BOD 1865 got our interest so we placed a cache container and did a little research that evening. This post was one of 138 placed in the 1960's to describe the route of the Butterfield Overland Dispatch, a staging company that ran from Missouri to Denver in the mid 1860.
Part of the interesting history of staging is the lack of corporate ethics that were displayed during that era. A competing line established by the Stage King Ben Holladay used what best can be described as "cutthroat tactics" to see that his competion failed. He had his men dress up as indians, attack and burn Butterfield stages, and rob their patrons. By March 1866, Butterfield has sold out to Ben Holladay and the competition ended.
