Church Micro 876 West Stourmouth - All Saint's

Down a dead end lane in West Stourmouth leading to the Little Stour, and almost hidden by trees, you first see the wooden bell-cote and tiny steeple of this delightful small ragstone, flint and brick church, with the western bay of its nave supported by massive brick buttresses. The church was a substantial building in Saxon times and there remains strong evidence of this time, a blocked up Saxon window is still visible. All Saints was damaged by an earthquake in 1382 and it is assumed that considerable rebuilding was required after that event. Inside, the main impression is of 19th century work of good quality but there is a little old glass, box pews, a 17th century pulpit with text boards and a fine Royal Arms of George III. The attractive tiled flooring includes three interesting memorial stones.  Despite serving the communities of both East and West Stourmouth for centuries, this lovely old church was made redundant by the church authorities in 1979. It seemed its fate was sealed and slowly but surely decay set in. Fortunately, it has been saved for us all and is one of the 340+ church buildings cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust.
