The church was built in early Norman times, before 1100. It
consisted originally of the nave and chancel replacing, it is
believed, an earlier Saxon church.
One of the original Norman windows is to be seen high up on an
arch on the south side. On one splay is an interesting painting,
dating from about 1220, showing a fragment of the Christmas story.
It would have been part of a sequence of paintings on the original
wall of the nave.
