Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates are for the Wellow Pinfold not far from the Bonus Cache of the Wellow Nature Trail. To obtain the co-ordinates for the actual cache you must have solved the puzzle at each of the 15 caches along the trail. At each cache you will find a physical object (Nature Trail Based), name the object and then use a letter (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) to find a number in the below key. When you have found all the numbers you will have the co-ordinates for this bonus cache.

Example:

If the item found was a BADGER and the clue is _ _ _ * _ _ you would be looking for the 4th letter in the word Badger. Use that letter to look up the corresponding number in the key above (G = 0). Place the 0 in order of clues found which will give you the final co-ordinates for the bonus cache.

Good Luck!

The bonus cache is a large container with lots of nature trail themed goodies inside along with the usual logbook. If you have enjoyed the hunt or have any comments about any of the clues etc we would love your feedback + any photos you took on the way. After finding the cache, continue down the path to the pinfold (stone construction on your left).

The Pinfold History

The Pinfold was erected in 1842, after the Inclosures Act for the purpose of holding straying stock until the Toft Holders committee could assess what fines were appropriate to be charged to their owners. The Inclosure Acts was a series of UK Parliament Acts which affected the common land in Wellow. This meant that the rights that people once held to graze animals on the common land were denied. A typical fine was; for each Beast - One shilling, for each Sheep - Two pence with a minimum charge of One shilling.

To head home: Turn right and walk into the village – Stop off to enjoy the village green with one of the few surviving maypoles in the country. Traditional maypole dancing still takes place here annually each spring bank holiday Monday. Why not treat yourself to a drink in one of the villages fine watering holes; “The Durham Ox” or the more quaint “Red Lion” (because you’ve earnt it!) To reach your starting point, continue walking along the main road. At Wellow House School take a sharp right turn; the Dam can be seen approx 100 yards on your right together with your awaiting transport home!
