Geocache Description:

Small box cache’n’dash, which can be done with our other cache very close by, GC160YI “Cucklington Ridge”

“Atlas Stones”
Cucklington, Somerset.

These big iron gates, in the middle of nowhere, were originally the main entrance to Shanks House, Cucklington, built in 1566. In 1851 it was owned by the Grant-Dalton family. The Grant-Daltons had connections with Cornwall and South Africa and owned lots of land across the southern part of England.

This is a grade 1 listed building with parts of it being added in later years. In the 1851 census it seems to have been rented out. The head of the household is shown to be the Rector Samuel Marindin who was born in Edgbaston, Warwickshire, and his wife Isabella and her sister Emily, who were both born in Beckenham, Kent. Samuel and Isabella had 2 sons and 3 daughters all born in Cucklington. In that year the family had many servants at the house, the nurse was from Kent, the cook was from Marnhull, the housemaid from Gillingham, Nursery maid from Buckhorn Weston, the kitchen maid from Cucklington, and the groom from Maiden Bradley.
When replacing this cache PLEASE make sure it is well covered to protect it for the next cacher to find thank you.
