Geocache Description:

Located north of the Deephole Ranch in the northern Smoke Creek Desert region. The area is flat and a short walk from the junction of highway 447 and Sand Pass Road.

This deep springs were used beginning in 1852 by the emigrants taking the Nobles Cutoff from the main Applegate trail into northern California. The ranch was established in 1890 and was a stage stop between the railroad at Wadsworth and the Cedarville, Surprise Valley region. There was a post office here from 1894 to 1911 when everything was moved to the new town of Gerlach. Deephole Ranch was the headquarters for the Gerlach Land and Livestock Co. that operated four other ranches and over 20,000 head of cattle between here and Surprise Valley. When the Western Pacific Railroad was built into the area, in 1908, they named the new site of the division point, roundhouse and station after Louis Gerlach.
