Geocache Description:

Located a short walk from downtown Kingfield. You can park close to GZ, or you can park in town and enjoy a nice walk across the bridge.

We have been wanting to put a cache somewhere around here for quite a while. We finally found the right spot, camouflaged the cache, and put it out for your enjoyment. There is terrific fishing here (they actually stock the Carrabassett from here every spring, and it is also a popular spot to take a dip on hot summer days. You may even be tempted to join the kids jumping off the bridge. This cache should be winter friendly, although you would definitely have to park in town then.

Kingfield was founded in 1807 by William King, who would go on to be Maine's first governor. Other illustrious residents include F.E. & F.O Stanley, inventors of the Stanley Dry Plate (purchased by Eastman Kodak in 1903) and the Stanley Steamer which at one point held the land speed record. Their sister Chansonetta earned her fame as a photographer. For more information on this amazing family please visit www.stanleymuseum.org. Another famous name is that of Amos Winter, founder of the Sugarloaf ski area in 1951. Amos and the Bigelow Boys cleared the original trails on Sugarloaf and were great boosters of the area as a winter destination.

Kingfield is regarded as the gateway to Maine's High Peaks as there is a higher concentration of 4000' mountains in Franklin county than anywhere else in the state. This area has terrific skiing (both downhill and nordic), fishing, snowmobiling, and hiking. There is surely something for everybody.
