A l'origine, le marais breton est une ancienne grande baie recouverte par l'océan : la baye de Bretagne. Pendant la Préhistoire, une sédimentationfluviale de la Loirecrée une zone de dépôt d'alluvions. La baie se bouche peu à peu. L'homme a favorisé cet ensablement en construisant des digues pour protéger les polders et des canaux lors de la construction des marais salants.
Le marais breton, d'une surface de 45 000 hectares, fut le plus grand gisement de marais salants français au Moyen Âge et le Collet fut un port actif d'exportation du sel. Après quoi l’envasement amorça son déclin. Une grande partie du marais, entre le Dain et la baie ainsi que devant Bourgneuf, reste salée et sert à l'ostréiculture.
Dans ce marais breton, il y a une partie où l'eau est salée et une autre où l'eau est saumâtre, c'est à dire composée d'eau de pluie jointe à l'eau des étiers. L'eau douce est rare et l'été l'eau manque souvent. Au 19e siècle, le seul point d'eau douce et propre est la Fontaine des Jalberges. Tous les habitants et le bétail se ravitaillent à cette fontaine.
Au début du 20e siècle, le puits est complété par une pompe manuelle aspirante et refoulante à volant installée dans un pilier. Plus tard, ce pilier est rehaussé et allongé afin que l'eau puisse se déverser dans les tonneaux des charettes.

Initially, the Breton marsh is an old large bay covered by the ocean: the baye of Brittany. During prehistoric times, sedimentation of the Loire river created a zone of alluvial deposit. The bay is the mouth gradually. The man helped the sand by building dikes to protect the polders and canals during the construction of the salt marshes.
Marsh Breton, an area of 45 000 hectares, was the largest salt deposit in the french middle ages and « Le collet » was a busy port exporting salt. Afterwards siltation began its decline. Much of the marsh between the bay and Dain and before Bourgneuf remains salty and is used for culture.
In the Breton marsh, there is a part where the water is salty and another where water is brackish, ie composed of rain water attached to the water étiers. Fresh water is scarce and the water was often lacking. In the 19th century, the only fresh water and clean is the Fountain of Jalberges. All residents and livestock will refuel at this fountain.
In the early 20th century, the well is completed by a hand pump suction and to wheel installed in a pillar. Later, this pillar is enhanced and extended so that water can be poured into the barrels of Charette.
