Pumpjack
The Geology
In the Tertiary period primeval seas flooded the Rhine rift.
Sediments deposited which stored hydrocarbons - the basis of oil.
The creation of the Rhine Valley rift from south southwest to north
northeast started approximately 35 to 40 million years ago. In the
opening of the rift – which is today up to 35 kilometers wide
– sediments were deposited in the process of million years.
All the material was coming from the ditch shoulders. The thickness
of these sediments can amount to up to nearly 4000 meters. In parts
of these settling sediments then under appropriate temperature and
pressure conditions the organic components - enormous plankton
quantities of a primeval ocean - deposited at the same time and
were converted to oil or natural gas. A part of these hydrocarbons
moved then into the oil and gas deposit structures resulted from
tectonic movements which represent these stores today. The output
from this last pumpjack from 1952 to 1994 was more than 1 million
tons of crude oil.
But now more about the cache:
Park your car at the main parking lot. There is no parking fee.
Enter Kühkopf Island. There is a very interesting visitor centre.
No need to visit the visitor centre to discover the cache but I
recommend it. Opening hours: Saturday, Sunday and public holidays 9
a.m. - 5 p.m.. There are other caches on Kühkopf island. Check them
out! Use insect repellent – Mosquitoes everywhere! Calculate
20 - 30 minutes to walk this Earthcache. Have fun!

geologic name of this layer?

Ölfördergebiet Hessisches Ried
Die Geologie
Im Tertiär überfluteten urzeitliche Meere den Rheingraben.
Sedimente lagerten sich ab, die Kohlenwasserstoffe speicherten -
die Grundlage des Öls. Die Bildung des von Südsüdwest nach
Nordnordost streichenden Rheintalgrabens hatte vor etwa 35 bis 40
Millionen Jahren begonnen. In dem sich öffnenden Graben, der heute
bis zu 35 Kilometer breit ist, wurden im Verlauf von Millionen
Jahren Sedimente abgelagert, die hauptsächlich von den begrenzenden
Grabenschultern stammen. Die Mächtigkeit dieser Ablagerungen kann
bis zu fast 4000 Meter betragen.
In Teilen dieser Sedimente wurden dann unter entsprechendem Druck-
und Temperaturbedingungen die gleichzeitig abgelagerten organischen
Bestandteile – riesige Planktonmengen eines urzeitlichen
Meeres – zu Erdöl oder Erdgas umgewandelt. Ein Teil dieser
Kohlenwasserstoffe wanderte dann in die durch tektonische
Bewegungen entstandenen Fangstrukturen, die heute diese
Lagerstätten darstellen. Die Fördermenge der Pumpe betrug von 1952
bis 1994 mehr als 1 Million Tonnen Erdöl.
Der Cache
Benutze den Parkplatz vor dem Besucherzentrum in Stockstadt
(kostenlose Parkplätze vorhanden). Es ist nicht notwendig das
Besucherzentrum zu betreten, so dass man diesen Cache auch
außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten (SA, SO, Feiertag von 9 - 17 Uhr)
erkunden kann. Allerdings empfehle ich den Besuch ausdrücklich.
Plane für diesen Besuch circa 20 - 30 Minuten Zeit ein. Es lohnt
sich hier auch andere Caches zu machen. Mückenschutz dringend
erforderlich, wenn ihr die Wege verlasst.
Folgende Logbedingung muss erfüllt sein:
1.) Zwischen Stockstadt und Eich befindet sich ein Ölfeld direkt
auf einer speziellen geologischen Erdschicht. Wie heißt diese
Erdschicht im Fachausdruck?
2.) In welchen/m Jahr(en) wurde(n) die größte(n) Fördermenge(n) an
dieser Pumpe erreicht?
3.) Wie lautet die identische Nummer des Bohrlochs und der
Pumpe?
Ich würde mich freuen, wenn Du ein Bild von dir oder deinem
GPSr vor der Pumpe mit dem Log hochladen würdest.
