Geocache Description:

The name of the cache speaks of its purpose – to bring you to the centre of the village of Arbanasi and after finding it, to let you explore this beautiful place. It is located in a park from where you can choose your next destination – the calmness of the monasteries located in the village, or to just explore its quiet streets. I have not included any photos of Arbanasi so you can make some and share them with us here in your logs. Good luck.

Below is some information about the monasteries. If you wish to learn more about the rest of the historical sites in the village visit (visit link) .

"Holy Virgin's Monastery" is smaller than "St Nicolas" and was built in the northwestern part of the village. It represents a complex of a church, residential buildings and a chapel. During the first years of the Turkish slavery it was a working and prosperous monastery, but after the kurdjalii's invasion it falls into decay and is abandoned. As late as in 1680 it was built the new church that can be seen nowadays.
It's a law, oblong, one-apse basilica with two narthexes. On the northern side is situated a wide chapel named St Trinity where can be seen the famous wonder-working icon of Holy Virgin. In 1716 the Troyan monk Daniel constructed residential buildings and revived the monastery's activities. In 1762 the church and the chapel were renewed and decorated with wall paintings that preserved its art values up to the present day. The ancient embossed icon of the Holy Virgin with a silver repousse cover is also of interest. A bell tower is rising above the monastery's main entrance.
The monastery is declared "cultural monument".

The St Nikolas' Monastery is situated in the western end of Arbanassi village. It was built in the second middle of XVII c. and the beginning of XVIII c. as parochial church. According to a Greek gospel from 1670, the monastery's chapel St Elias was consecrated 15 April 1710. There is information about rebellions in the monastery in 1717, 1729, 1744. The church was painted in 1765 and 1784. During the big kurjalii invasion in 1798 the church was plundered, almost destroyed and abandoned. 10 years after it was reconstructed with donations and in 1833 it was converted into a monastery. In the 60 years of XIX c. about 30 nuns were living in the monastery.
After the Liberation the monastery and the monastery's church were reconstructed (1893).
