Geocache Description:

A small cache in a Victorian Gothic Church in a village on the north side of Hertford, part of the “ Church Micro” series

William Parker of Ware Park conveyed the plot of land on the corner of Bengeo Street and New Road. The cost of £4,700 was raised by public subscription headed by Abel Smith, the patron of the living, other local gentry such as Admiral Gosselin of Bengeo Hall, the Hon. W. Cowper of Panshanger, William Parker of Ware Park and the Reverend Charles Deedes, the incumbent.
The material chosen for the construction was Kentish ragstone quarried near Maidstone. For the first stage the contractors were a London firm who built the nave and chancel. But for the second stage which included the tower and spire, the local Hertford firm of EJ Ekins was employed which is still in existence today.
Holy Trinity was completed in 1855, in the Gothic style beloved of the Victorians, one of many projects in a huge national programme of church building.
10m East of the GC is "Bedhead Grave marker" Whilst it is not old, it is rare. The 'Resident and his Wife' used to live the other side of the fence in a big house. These Markers were commonly used prior to the 1840's. [See Gallery for image]
Today, Holy Trinity Church is a defining landmark feature of the parish, its spire clearly visible as you approach the town of Hertford from the north.
This is a building the community is proud to share, with doors open and a warm welcome on offer should you want to arrange a planned visit or just drop by.
An active community supports the church and its activities. Nearby St Leonard’s Church is also part of the Bengeo parish community. For more photos, history as well Parish information visit : -www.parishofbengeo.com
Cache placed with kind permission of Church Authorities & Hertford Town Council If anyone would like to add new Caches to this series please do, I would just ask that you let Sadexploration know first so that he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
