SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL MUSHROOM MONTH!

So why celebrate the mushroom...well, why not? After all, ancient Egyptians believed that mushrooms were the plant of immortality. The flavors intrigued pharaohs so much that mushrooms were decreed food befit for royalty. Commoners were not allowed to touch them. Rituals were initiated and not just in Egypt. Mushroom ceremonies took place in Russia, China, Greece, Mexico, and Latin America. Mushrooms were believed to contain powers that enabled one to have super human strength, to become a finder of lost things, and to guide one's soul to the gods. Shrooms have been part of our lives for centuries. Furthermore, there are those health benefits...Recent studies have shown shiitake and reishi mushrooms are potential cancer-fighters. as well as a good source of riboflavin and niacin and contain no fat or cholesterol....so why not celebrate with a good ol' fashion barbecue at Trout Creek...maybe we'll even make some mushroom-swiss burgers while we're at it!

This is a traditional no-frills, no-contests type of event... just a barbecue/potluck lunch with a chance to meet old & new geocaching friends. We will provide some hot dogs & hamburgers to barbecue as well as buns, ketchup & mustard. However, we will need extra provisions, so please bring your favorite edible, including food to barbecue, salads, beverages, baked goods, chips and whatever else may satisfy a geocacher's hunger. We will also need paper goods, such as plates, utensils, napkins, etc. When you log your "will attend", please let us know what you would like to bring so we can keep track here.

If you are have not had the opportunity to explore the area, here's the scoop about this fine place: The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Park (“LHWP”) is the largest regional park located in Hillsborough County. Located northeast of Tampa, east of I-75 and north of US 301, this 16,000 acre tract of undeveloped wilderness is managed by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, in some cases in conjunction with SWFWMD and is an amazingly multi-faceted piece of land. In addition to its primary purpose of water storage and conservation of such ecological features as a wood stork rookery, a sawgrass marsh, a sphagnum bog and two sinkholes, the park provides numerous opportunities for the public to enjoy its natural beauty. Here one can paddle along the 12-mile stretch of Hillsborough River, through the lilies and cypress swamps while enjoying the company of such creatures as wading birds, turtles and alligators…or perhaps enjoy hiking/biking along the 60-miles of forest trails, fishing from riverside boardwalks or enjoying a relaxing picnic or cookout with family or friends.

There are many fine geocaches hidden in the wilderness park, some of which can be accessed by land and some via the river. So come prepared with hiking paraphernalia, canoes/kayaks, or whatever else "floats your boat", so-to-speak. If you are interested in canoe or kayak rentals, e-mail us and we can point you in the right direction. Also check out the bookmarked lists included on this listing to point you in the right direction...there will also be a few new caches hidden for the event , which will be published sometime between now and the event.

..and, of course, travel bugs and geocoins are welcome for trading and discovery purposes!

We look forward to seeing one and all!

8/5/09 UPDATE - By the time the big event rolls around, a number of new caches will be hidden. It is up to you whether you want to find them before the event as they are published or if you want to wait until the Fungal Festivities. However, many of these caches are being hidden with the thought that some cachers attending may want to have a "Busy Day in Florida" on event day. Check out GC1R1VW Busy Day in Florida for more info about how to go about accomplishing this challenge. As of now, the following icons are available in the Wilderness Park for the event- Event, Traditional, Multicache, Puzzle/Mystery and Letterbox. An Earthcache is located at Lettuce Lake Park (GC19X16) not far from the event and there is some other caching opportunities are in the works. Stay tuned!
