TOUR DE L'Osse - [EN]
On the tops of coastal cliffs and rocky projections, 91 Genova guard towers stand watch. They come from a time when these shores were the most dramatic in Europe. At the beginning of the 15th century, roughly 500 years after they were expelled from the interior Moors, Pirate raids from North Africa, began to gnaw at the coastal villages.
Christians became hostages, where a fat ransom was required in order to not be sold as slaves. Annually hundreds of people disappeared from the island.
At the end of the 15th century pirate incursions repeated so often that many Corsians left the coast forever, and dwelt in the mountain villages. Genovian were ordered to protect the remaining population and the threat to the ship trade, guard towers or torri were build on strategic locations island chain. There were robust circular towers consisting of one or two floors and measuring an average of 12-15 meters. The only entrance was a door at a height of five meters above the ground, which could bereached by ladder, which was pulled up.
The construction and financing were the responsibles of the villagers, in each of them lived guard called Torregiani, whose task was to report any unexpected arrival of ships, by setting a fire on the battlements. In this way it was possible to allert the entire population of the island within an hour.
Piracy in Genoa at the end of domination more or less disappeared, but the torri were stillused, this proved especially vital in the Britsh-Corsican rads about 250 years later. The system of guard towers inspired the British so much, that they build similar chain-like structure on the south coast of England and Ireland, which were used in to defend Frances attacks. During World War II, they served as a lookout tower.

Na vrcholcích pobrežních skalnatých výbežku a útesu truní jednadevadesát janovských strážních veží. Pocházejí z dob, kdy tyto brehy patrily k nejdramatictejším v celé Evrope. Na pocátku 15. století, zhruba 500 let poté, co byli z vnitrozemí vyhnáni Maurové, zacaly prímorské vesnice trýznit námorní nájezdy pirátu ze severní Afriky.
Krestané se stávali rukojmími, za než bylo vyžadováno tucné výkupné nebo byli prodáváni jako otroci. Rocne zmizeli z ostrova stovky lidí.
Ke konci 15. století se pirátské vpády opakovaly tak casto, že mnozí Korzicané opustili pobreží navždy a usadili se v horských vesnicích. Aby mohli Janované ochránit zbylé obyvatelstvo i ohrožený námorní obchod, vybudovali na strategických místech ostrova retez strážních veží neboli torri. Robustní kruhové veže sestávaly z jednoho nebo dvou pater a merili v prumeru 12-15 metru. Jediným vstupem byly dvere ve výšce pet metru nad zemí, k nimž se stoupalo po žebríku, který se dal vytáhnout. Stavbu veží financovali venkované a v každé z nich žil strážný, tzv. Torregiani, jehož úkolem bylo oznámit priplutí jakékoli neocekávané lodi zažehnutím ohne na cimburí. Tímto zpusobem bylo možno zburcovat obyvatelstvo celého ostrova behem jedné hodiny. Pirátství na konci janovské nadvlády více méne zaniklo, ale torri sloužily dále – osvedcily se predevším pri anglo-korsických nájedech o 250 let pozdeji. Brity systém strážních veží nadchnul natolik, že vybudovali retez podobných staveb na jižním pobreží Anglie a Irska, který mel sloužit pri námorních útocích Francie. Za druhé svetové války sloužily veže jako rozhledny.
