MOINHO DE ARMAÇÃO TIPO AMERICANO

As primeiras referências a moinhos de vento em Cascais, mais precisamente em Alcabideche, datam do século XI nos versos do poeta árabe Ibn Muqana.

Na segunda metade do século XIX, surge o moinho tipo americano. Eficaz e de fácil instalação, difundiu-se com sucesso, chegando a Portugal nas primeiras décadas do século XX. Estas estruturas ganharam esta denominação pelo facto de ostentarem uma armação metálica na cobertura do moinho, semelhante a uma casa de habitação e por se tratar de uma criação oriunda dos Estados Unidos da América.
Em Cascais, uma família desenvolveu a ideia de acordo com as necessidades e características do concelho, introduzindo velas em chapa em forma de saco, aproveitando melhor a energia eólica num conceito de maximização da produção.
Existem no concelho de Cascais dois exemplares de Moinhos de Armação, o de Alcabideche e outro em Alcorvim de Cima (Malveira da Serra), este último sem qualquer hipótese de recuperação.
O Moinho de Alcabideche foi alvo de uma grande campanha de obras de reabilitação que respeitou na íntegra a sua traça original, permitindo o melhor entendimento da evolução dos processos tecnológicos.
Com vista a dar a conhecer o património molinológico do concelho existe um centro interpretativo junto ao  moinho que pode ser visitado.

AMERICAN FRAMEWINDMILL

The first references to windmills in Cascais, more precisely in Alcabideche, can be found in the eleventh century poems written by the arab poet Ibn Muqana.

More effective and easy to install, the American windmill, invented in the second half of the nineteenth century, appears in Portugal in the first decades of the twentieth century,

The reason for the name of these structures was not only because they displayed a metallic frame on the mill structure but also due to its north american origin.

In Cascais, a family developped the idea according to the needs and basic features of the county by introducing bag-shaped metallic blades, in order to use eolic energy to maximize production.

In Cascais county, there are two specimens of Frame Windmills, one in Alcabideche and the other in Alcorvim de Cima (Malveira da Serra), this last one with no chance of being repaired.

Alcabideche mill has been restored through a major campaign of rehabilitation which fully respected its original construction, allowing therefore a better understanding of the technological evolution.

In order to exhibit the county mill heritage, there is an interpretative center next to the mill which is open to those who want to visit.

From Monday to Friday – 9 a.m to 1 p.m and 2 p.m to 5 p.m

Visits schedule: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. and from 12 p.m to 4 p.m.
