Over Easter 2009 I spent 9 happy days walking the South Downs way
with 2 very good friends. At one spot, on the hill overlooking
Cocking, I found a large chalk ball. You can see a photo of me at
cache 3 !!
I later found out that the sculpturer, Andy Goldsworthy, had placed
a trail of 13 balls around the area. The chalk used apparently came
from a local quarry, although how he got them there is a mystery to
me !
So for my 8th Geocaching trail I invite you to join me on the trail
to find the balls. NONE OF THE CACHES ARE UNDER / ON / IN THE
BALLS, so please no trying to roll them or moving them in any way
!
Cache 12 - 'Ball No 7'
After walking past the SSI for a way, you eventually come to ball
7. Its up a slight bank to your left. Cache 12 is around here
somewhere.....!
The Trail :-
Parking coordinates are shown below. Please be careful coming in /
out as the entrance is concealed.
Caches for the balls are placed as near as I could get them, and
there are some extra ones to get you there. Due to a large amount
of existing caches near the end of the trail I had to cut the trail
short, but the weblog for the bonus gives you a few options for
finding your way home !
The trail is a bit chalky and can get muddy in the rain. Keep an
eye out for balls, a barrow, and a ruined house. I also saw deer,
rabbits, and a weasel/stoat
All the paths are either bridleways or footpaths. They are all
signposted so you shouldn't get lost !
BUS FARE ... One of the options explained at the bonus cache is to
catch a bus back to the car park. If you wish to do this please
bring change. As at July 2009 the fare was £2.60. Bus times are in
the weblog for the bonus cache.
Additional Info :-
Trail length :- 4.9 miles (if you catch bus back to start) OR 6.7
miles (if you do new caches 15.1 to 15.3) / 15 caches + 1
bonus
Suggested parking : N50 56.558, W 0 45.340
