Spencer Glacier Edge
This cache was placed by the over nighter’s in honor of the Spencer Whistle Stop Event Cache, hosted by Meljo in June of 2009. The event was attended by many and enjoyed by all. Meljo was the organizer; Malcore was in charge of communications; Artic Rose took care of marshmallows and camp protection, Trail 6 carried the Moose, TroveRover was packing and kept everyone in line and Deke was just Deke. Many thanks to Meljo.

The cache is at the first of the five planned ‘whistle stops’ along the Alaska Railroad’s passage through the mountains south of Portage Valley in the Chugach National Forest. Access is only by rail in the summer – and snowmobile in the winter, although most of the caches are not accessible in the winter. This cache is at the top of a small hill, past the end of the trail. Get an up close look at Spencer Glacier and looks back on Spencer Lake. Just follow the small brook up the north side of the glacier.
The Spencer Whistle Stop features twin shelters with a little history of the railroad and Spencer Glacier. From the ‘whistle stop’ it’s a short walk, 1.1 miles, to the group camping area, (which will have water by the end of 2009) and the viewing platforms at Spencer Lake. A trail to the north leads to two other viewing areas and soon to a trail up the mountain to a forest service cabin. There are several free campsites along the north trail around the lake.

Exercise ‘bear aware’ behavior during your visit. Use the bear-proof food containers provided if you’re staying overnight, and make enough noise while hiking to warn bears of your presence. Please practice ‘Leave No Trace’ / ‘Lift-Look-Replace’ caching to maintain the area’s pristine appearance. The cache will not be accessible during the winter.

For information on accessing this area visit the Alaska Railroad website in the Traveler section’s segment on the Glacier Discovery Train.
