Geocache Description:

By car park

Earlestown Station being on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway is one of the earliest stations in the country but is also claimed to the the first junction station on a stam railway as the Warrington and Newton Railway was opened less than a year after the L&M and made its junction here. For a time too London to Scotland trains used the junction. For full details of its interesting history see the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earlestown_railway_station

As well as the importance of the junction it also had an unusual feature in that a colliery line ran from the line coming from Warrington, across the triangle of tracks and passed over the Liverpool and Manchester line on the level, past the Western end of the car park and along the back of what is now a car park opposite behind the houses in King Street. I believe that the coal trains had right of way over main line trains and when they crossed the road the guard stretched a rope across to stop cars passing! Many years ago I had the job of trying to sell the land on which this colliery spur had run and had the detailed plans, alas no more!. Although the cache is almost directly below a CCTV camera this is a good spot to photograph trains so it might be a good idea to have a camera to hand while finding the cache as a decoy.
The cache cannot be reached from the station platform
