Geocache Description:

Lovely peaceful spot for this church in the village of Leonards Stanley. You can park close to the church and is a quick cache & dash. Suitable for disabled or pushchairs. The cache WILL NOT BE ON church property and please respect any activity that may be taking place at the church. You may like to take a stroll up Gypsy Lane were your find peace and quiet, this was the original cache site until muggled.

The cache is a magnetic nano containers which holds just the log sheet, you might need tweezers, please ensure it's placed back where found. Stealth may be needed at times with photograph a good disguise. I've dedicated this cache to my Grandson Lee who passed away at the tender age of just 14, I know he would have been very keen to have had a go at Geocaching. I have also started a "Lee's Memorial TB" from this spot.

ST. SWITHUNS CHUCH

St. Swithun's was the church of an Augustinian priory, founded by Roger Berkeley circa 1131.Ê This priory became Benedictine after being granted as a cell to Gloucester in 1146. It has a wide aisleless nave and crossing and an exceptionally massive central tower, transepts and chancel. The embattled upper stage of the tower is a 13th C addition. Within the church there are Norman columns embedded into the chancel walls for a former vault. The central shafts have carved capitals Ð one notably depicting Mary Magdalene wiping Christ's feet., his hand raised in blessing. The nave has a 14th C wagon roof. The font inside the church is an early 18th C chalice-shaped font; whilst outside the North porch is a carved Italian well-head.. The stained glass window is on the North side of the nave and is by Edward Payne, 1984. The Late Norman North doorway has two chevroned orders.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let "Sadexploration" know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication

There is now a Church Micro statistics page which can beviewed via the bookmark list
