A CURVA DA ÁGUA - RALLY TAP
Já descobrimos as primeiras 100 caches e para tal decidimos comemorar com a colocação da nossa primeira cache. Nada melhor que reviver o passado em Sintra com as boas memórias do Rally TAP que passava pelos caminhos tortuosos da serra.
We have already discovered the cache number 100 and for such we decided to commemorate with our own first cache. Nothing better than remember the past times in Sintra with the good memories of Rally TAP, raced in the narrows roads of the mountain.
A primeira curva "à séria" do início dos troços da Serra de Sintra era a Curva da Água. A água escorria pela berma da curva e devido à inclinação da mesma, a meio dela, a água pulava da berma direita e inundava a curva, atravessando-a até à berma oposta.
The “real one” first corner of the first stage in Sintra mountain was the “Water’s corner”. The water flows on the right side of the asphalt but at the middle, the water “jumped” and flooded the curve crossing it all to the opposite side, due to the slope.
Os bólides que vinham numa correria desenfreada pelo piso rápido e normalmente seco do troço da Lagoa Azul, vencendo as curvas rápidas a uma velocidade estonteante, deparavam-se com uma curva média à esquerda, a descer e molhada. Os condutores, alguns desprevenidos, viam-se em palpos de aranha para agarrar os pneus ao alcatrão e por muitas vezes lambiam a vegetação da berma direita na saída da curva (que ia ficando limpa com as diversas passagens das viaturas de competição), faziam um pião completo a meio da curva, ou meio pião e ficavam virados para cima, mas no limite saíam em frente a meio da curva, havendo alguns que acabavam por subir um pouco do pequeno morro que ali ainda existe (que já foi subida de teste para os 4x4 e agora é descida saborosa para os praticantes de BTT).
The racing machines came in a wild running, over the normally dry and fast asphalt of the very first meters of the Blue Lagoon stage, flying over the fast track in an unimaginable speed till reaching an average left down wet corner. The drivers, some of them unprepared, hardly got the car in their hands, the tires slipped on the ground and, for many times, they cut the grass in the right side corner’s end, (that became clean and more clean till the last car), they did a 360º turn in the middle of the corner, a 180º turn put them in the wrong way or lost direction and climbed up the front track that still exists (a hard test for the off road vehicles, nowadays a delicious descending for the BTT users).
Era ao longo da encosta que centenas de aficionados se sentavam, tal como se de um anfiteatro se tratasse. Mas não cabiam todos e então havia muitos mais espalhados por qualquer local em que se pudesse avistar o meio da curva, o local onde a água corria. Delicioso espectáculo protagonizado por pilotos que dominavam carros de tracção traseira sem ajudas electrónicas, viaturas de alta potência como o eram o Grupo B, ou mesmo aquele que vinha para passear pelo Rally mas que não conhecia a Curva da Água.
Hundreds of rally lovers staid throughout the hillside, that looked like a roman theatre. The space had no enough room for all of them and we could see spectators surrounding the course, spread wherever possible. What a gorgeous driving show we got by pilots who drove rear wheels traction cars, without electronic helps, remember the high powered Group B cars, or even those ones that only came for a soft Rally but nothing knew about this tricky corner.
Os que sabiam ao que vinham brindavam-nos com uma atravessadela monumental. Batiam-se palmas pelas bancadas, ouviam-se gritos, mas também se vaiavam aqueles que, receosos, quase paravam a meio para "deixar passar o comboio". "Até a minha avó conduzia mais depressa" ouvia-se um de nós a gritar. E isto era o espectáculo na Curva da Água.
The “special ones” offered us a long sideways run and it was time for clapping and shouting. But for those that almost parked in the middle we said, “Even my grandmother could do it better”. This was Water’s Corner show.
