Geocache Description:

Welcome to the proud and never enslaved area of Crete.

About 10 km from Chora Sfakion, westwards and up in the mountains, there is the village of Anopolis. It is a very old place as remains from the ancient Greek eras suggest. It used to have many inhabitants and its harbor was located in what is now Loutro. It flourished mainly in the Roman and the Venetian Periods.

Anopolis was a revolutionary centre against the Venetians and was destroyed in 1365. It was also the centre of revolutions against the Turks in Crete and was never inhabited by them, making it the only free place in Crete during the Turkish occupation.

Anopolis is the birth place of the Cretan rebel Ioannis Vlachos, the leader of the revolution of 1770 against the Turks. Because of his education, his compatriots called him "Daskalos" (teacher), hence his nickname Daskalogiannis. He was captured at Frangokastello by Turkish forces and later tortured and executed in Heraklion. The airport in Chania is named after him.

To find the cache you have to follow a narrow asphalt road from the main square in Anopolis and through the village to get to the small church of Agia Aikaterini in 1 km. You can walk along it or drive and park at the end of it at N 35 12.746 - E 024 05.292. There you are at the foot of the hill with the church of Agia Aikaterini on top. If you have time, don’t hesitate to climb the path up to it. The place used to be Daskalogiannis’s watchtower and offers a breathtaking view over Loutro and the south coast of Crete.

The cache is situated at the beginning of the path that ends down in Loutro. It is a plastic container wrapped in a plastic bag. It contains a logbook, a pen, the Geocaching note in English and Greek and some goodies to trade. You have to climb up a tiny little bit to find it.
