St. Michael's, Pen Selwood
Like most churches in
Somerset, St. Michael’s has a tower with 6 bells, but no
steeple. It is stoutly built of stone, some of which is
greensand dug out of some of the thousands of pits that “Pen”
is famous for. The roof is tiled with stone slabs because the
greensand is not able to be split into thin enough sheets to
be used. It is thought that around the time of 1450, the
tower, chancel and maybe even the nave were rebuilt. Like many
other churches, it underwent extensive renovation in the last
century. In 1805 the side walls of the nave were pulled down
and rebuilt approx four feet higher and between 1848 &
1849 a new north aisle and vestry were added. After the 1805
rebuilding, there was local indignation when it was learnt
that gravestones and stone from the wall of the nave had been
used to build a new wall at “Pear Ash” a new pigsty in “Marsh”
and a toilet at “Forest Lodge” If you would like to add to the
church micros and place some yourself, please contact
Sadexploration for a number for your listing.
