Geocache Description:

This is a relatively easy earthcache in the Nelspruit Botanical Garden. The co-ords will take you to the confluence of two very important rivers in the Nelspruit/Lowveld Area.

Confluence, in geography, describes the meeting of two or more bodies of water. It usually refers to the point where a tributary joins a more major river, called the mainstem, when that major river is also the highest order stream in the drainage basin.

The Botanical garden sits astride the Crocodile River where it has cut down into the granite bedrock to form a narrow gorge. At the Nels River viewpoint you can view the confluence of the Crocodile and Nels River, where both rivers tumble over waterfalls within the Garden.

The great Nelspruit cascades, which are a bit higher up from the confluence, are a spectacular sight when in full flow. The Crocodile River flows through the Nelspruit industrial area, the Lowveld agricultural area and the Kruger National Park. Providing a vital lifegiving force to all along the river.

At the cascades a little higher up from the confluence there are some large natural potholes in which a large amount of almost perfectly round pebbles are formed through erosion and the swirling motion of the water. In times of flood and heavy rain some of the pebbles are washed out of the potholes and end up in the cracks, crevases and pools above the Confluence. The cliff's formed by the rivers flow are also quite magnificent.

In order to claim a find here you need to meet the following requirements:

1) Find a nearly perfect round pebble and photograph it next to your GPSr, then mail it to me.

2) At the cascades above the confluence there is a huge pothole, e-mail me your estimate of how wide it is.
