This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

Geocache Description:

The Yorkshire Dales village of Stainforth originally got its name from the ‘stony ford’ which connected two settlements on opposite banks of the River Ribble. Stainforth is located close to the Forest of Bowland on the south west edge of the National Park.

The ford was replaced by a packhorse bridge in the 1670’s. The arch of the bridge crossed a beautiful area of the river which was surrounded in woodland. The packhorse bridge is now owned and protected by The National Trust. The bridge today joins Little Stainforth with Great Stainforth. Further downstream lies Stainforth Force, this is where the river flows over a limestone shelf and cascades into a deep pool. Creating an exquisite waterfall effect, this can not be missed!

Traditional grey stone cottages cluster on an uneven green next to Cowside Beck, and a small clapper bridge stretches from bank to bank. Catrigg Force further along Stainforth Beck is just a mile away.

There are many things to see in the Stainforth area including visiting one of the best preserved limestone kilns or investigating countless magnificent caves and caverns. And not forgetting the old Steam Trains which run along the Settle to Carlise Railway.
